Going Green in Tambo
Students from Tambo State School have turned a neglected garden area into a sustainable and profitable kitchen garden. With community assistance, especially from seniors, students installed garden beds and areas for composting and recycling. They planted different vines, vegetables, edible plants and fruit trees in the garden. Parents also became involved and donated shade mesh and volunteered their time to help with repairs, irrigation and infrastructure.
The garden is now a place where the local community and students come together and maintain the garden. The Garden Club is now a permanent part of school lunch breaks with students from all year levels.
"I really think the Garden Project encouraged kids to take responsibility. It taught them to grow food at home too. They were always eager to measure how much their plants had grown and it was great that it was an outdoor activity, not just classroom based." - Mrs Lynne Ogden, School Teacher
