How to grow Carrot Tops
Windowsill gardening with kids – another easy way to show them how plants grow.
Carrots are one of several vegies that can re-sprout after being harvested. Kids can create their own carrot top garden on a windowsill and watch the feathery leaves emerge from the carrots. Here’s how:
- Place a layer of pebbles or marbles in a shallow dish and then add enough water so that the marbles are two thirds covered.
- Cut a 1 – 2cm piece off the top of a few carrots and place the cut side on the marbles.
- Position the dish on a windowsill and after a few weeks leaves will start to shoot from the tops and fine white roots will grow from below.
- Top up the water as required.
A new orange carrot root won’t develop but it’s a fun way to show kids what can grow from a carrot top and it takes up almost no room at all.
