Creating A Growing Gift
A small decorated pot planted with a flower or tasty herbs makes a lovely gift for a special occasion like Christmas and Mother’s Day and it’s an easy kid’s project.
Terracotta pots are ideal as they’re cheap to buy and water based child friendly paints will stick to the surface.
What you’ll need:
- A small to medium sized terracotta pot.
- Colourful kids paints.
- PVC glue.
- Potting mix.
- Herb or flower seedlings or seeds.
What To Do:
Step 1: Clean a small, unglazed terracotta pot in warm soapy water so it’s free of dust and dirt and allow the pot to thoroughly dry.
Step 2: To minimise any mess, spread some sheets of newspaper out on a stable surface and then place the pot, upside down, onto the newspaper.
Step 3: Using small paint brushes, sponges or even little fingers (!) and a variety of colours of water based paint, let the kids decorate their own special pot. Hand and finger prints make a very personal touch.
Step 4: Allow the paint to dry. For a longer lasting finish, you can then apply a coat of PVA glue and let it dry.
Step 5: The pot can then be planted with a small flower or succulent purchased from your local garden centre or the pot filled with good quality potting mix and then some herb seeds such as chives or flower seeds such as marigold 'cupid mixed' into the surface. Keep the soil moist while the seeds or plant establishes.
Step 5: When you’re ready to present this special gift, tie a colourful ribbon around the pot.
